Be aware that looking to the specification of your receiver it doesn't state explicitely it supports HDR passthrough, that means that it does not. So you'll never get 4K Dolby Vision/HDR10 from Apple 4K via the receiver.

Good morning, I recently purchased a Sony 930 which I have been wanting for years but for the life of me I can not connect all the component together to make them work properly.

Equipment I have:

Apple TV 4K

Yamaha Receiver RXV573

Sony X930

HDMI Cables 4K

I have tried the following:

Method one:
Connect the Apple TV 4K via HDMI to the Yamaha Receiver
Connect the TV to the Receiver via HDMI as it is supposed to have 4K passthrough.
Result:
I get great sound but I can not get 4K to be detected, only 1080p

Method two:
Connect Apple TV to TV via HDMI
Connect TV to receiver via optical cable
Result:

I get perfect picture (4K double vision etc) but it does not detect 5.1 surround sound, only always 2 channels which I then have to change with on the remote (Straight and Direct always shows 2 channels only).

All my HDMI cables are newly bought and 4K compatible.
I am not sure what I am doing wrong, please help.

Hi Satquiel,

Have you tried changing the connection in method 2 from Optical to HDMI between the TV and receiver? Does changing the audio settings by going to Settings - Sound - Digital audio out - Auto 2 make a difference?

Win_88

Be sure that you connect the AVR HDMI OUT to the HDMI ARC (HDMI 3? That's the one on my XD80) of the TV. And again, depending on the Bravia model, only HDMI ports 2 and 3 support 4K at 60Hz.

Also in Settings -> "external input" -> "HDMI signal format" (roughly translated from Italian) you may need to select the Advanced format. There you'll also see which ports support that signal.

Hi Satquiel

Let's say that the Apple TV is connected to the TV via HDMI and you're playing 4k 5.1 content, does the TV show the correct signal information if your press the info button on the remote? If it does, check the audio signal format and see if the receiver supports it.

When it comes to the TV, just make sure it's running the latest firmware update and that it goes through a power cycle (unplug for a minute then plug it back in). You can also reset the TV to factory settings (bear in mind we're only assuming that the TV could be the cause if the issue until now and that there are just basic troubleshooting steps).

If the format is supposed to be supported by the receiver or if you follow the above steps and the issue doesn't get fixed, I'd you should say let Yamaha know about this.

Win_88
