hdmi output was disabled on xperia devices for "design" reasons, hdmi output comes by default os it was disabled by sony for some weird reason most likely due to getting people to use miracast, has this been fixed with the xperia 1 as i have decided to buy the 1 but if it has hdmi output disabled like all the other ones then i am doubtful.

@muutuu wrote:So I guess in landscape mode it would still have some black bars on a 16x9 tv? Does video from streaming apps or youtube work good?
Yes, you get black bars at top & bottom on 16x9 tv in landscape mode.
The resolution on the TV in my hotel room, which can go up to full HD, is only 1366x768.
I've tried showing Amazon Prime and Netflix on the TV - neither appear, just a black screen, although the sound is still playing on the TV
Just tried a youtube video running at 1080p - it showed at the same resolution on the TV - 1366x768, but in a smaller window on the screen with black borders all around. It would be interesting to see what happens on a proper 4K TV.
Hello everyone!
@ArcadeFire, I merged your post to this thread instead, just so we can keep all the discussion in one place!
The feature has been confirmed by several users and is working as well. Feels good to finally be able to offer this again as it has been some time since we had a device that supported this (Z5-series).
@Curtyboy and @drlmiles, thanks for confirming that it works!
Have an awesome weekend and hopefully the sun will be shining on all of you!
The resolution I've been able to get out is less than I expected - the USB-C adapter I was using is capable of 4K at 30hz (not 60hz as in the spec for the X1) but I hope to try it out on my 4K TV at home tomorrow
Finally ! Thank you Sony for putting hdmi out support again on your device !
Now keep it on next devices and don't remove it again please !
I've now tried it on my 4K TV, but am not clear that it is outputting in 4K (LG removed the "info" button from this TVs remote). Netflix will not output when plugged into the TV, but the Spiderman trailer that came on the phone outputs OK. Can someone else test what resolution it outputs in?
@Jonas Will HDMI over USB-C be re-activated on Sony Xperia XZ, XZ1, XZ2 and XZ3 with Android 10 update to work with Android 10 Desktop Mode ?
Hi @booldega, I don't know which devices will be updated to Android 10, but the Xperia XZ was not updated to Android 9 at least, so that one will most likely not receive Android 10, but for rest, I don't know at this time.
I will of course forward the feedback, but I'm not sure if it's possible in the device you listed as there can be restrictions/limitations.
Keep in mind that Xperia 1 runs Android 9 as well, so it's not something in Android 9 that "blocks" the feature!
Hi guys,
I have a few questions about the HDMI out support from Xperia 1.
Can anyone who has tested this confirm if this is essentially a like for like screen duplication? As someone mentioned that certain things do not display such as Netflix etc.
Also someone mentioned a USB dock, if using a dock (I presume it is static and the phone has to stand up right) how would you then send landscape picture to the tv? Would a dock essentially mean you have to remain in portrait mode?
Also if I have an Xperia XZ2 is it possible this feature will be unlocked again when upgrading to android 10?
Thanks

The dock I use is a box that allows a PC to dock to devices, such as an HDMI requiring TV.
It produces an exact duplicate of what is on the phone screen, changing if you change phone orientation. If you try to show Netflix, you get the sound playing, but blank screens on both the phone and TV.
I would not want to raise hopes about older Sony hardware getting such an update...
