Glass Back or Metal back Wireless Charging or none POLL

Sony with the latest series even a die-hard fantatic of a Sony Xperia user, such as myself have come to the conclusion (especially with the Samsung 888 gen 1 chip 'mutter mutter) that sony phones are getting hot

Now i propose the following

I can understand glass on the FRONT of the phon4e, but on the back no way and why?

GLASS is an INSULATOR of heat, so why have a glass back?

The only answer i can see is that for the Wireless charging facility.

Myself I see no point in wireless charging, its slow it is inefficient and builds up heat.

So with phones getting more powerful it makes no sense on having a glass (like an insulator) back

Here is my proposal:

DROP WIRELESS charging get rid of the glass back and instead have an ANODISED METAL/aluminium back as then the whole phone can act as a heatsink and heat is better dispersed and more quickly too. As then the whole PHONE acts like a heatsink

So the question is

1. Would you rather have a glass back and wireless charging but a  much hotter phone?

2. Metal/aluminium back but BRILLIANT HEAT removal, however no wireless charging?

I would go for option 2

But what is your choice and why?

Hi GilgameshUK, actually glass is a thermal conductor, so let's reconsider that. Also, Sony has released a software update solving the overheating issue already.

I think glass is better, and the wireless charging is important to me, for instance.

Solved the overheating? Try to record 15 minutes of 4k120 video without putting the phone in the freezer. Not gonig to happen.

I would like to have both. In the middle of the back an aluminum plate where you can attach a heatsink and around that glass with the induction coil under it.

Hi TheBadFrag, what's the model number of your phone that overheats? I have the Xperia 1 IV, and it's absolutely fine after the update.

No way your Xperia 1 IV can record 4k120 without overheating in normal temperatures. 5 to 6 Minutes is the max before the video pro app closes if you don't cool the phone.

Ok I just tested it again and now I got exactly 10 minutes 4k120 video before the app turned off. This was at 21°C room temperature.

Glass is actually very poor conductivity until heated to near melting point when it's molecular state changes to that of a more conductive state.

But...

The back panel of the 1iv has no impact on heat dissipation, the SOC heat diffuser actually sits in contact with the metal mid frame facing forwards. The rear chips are not part of the SOC and the rear board is separate from the front board with Sony using a sandwich PCB for 1iv.

With the main CPU being sat against the metal mid-frame, the part where the CPU sits on is a thickened heatsink which itself then sits against a copper heat spreader which covers the entire rear of the display.

In terms of heat dissipation, the cooling method is pretty sound and fixes via software I believe have been implemented. I believe as time goes on, as more updates are released, the issues could be even more fine tuned.

But with the back panel being glass, a change to metal would probably have zero impact.

Whether it will actually help or not, I wish that someone can see your post and maybe pass it as a feedback, hopefully it adds some insight.

that is what im saying

The greatest surface area to act as a heatsink is the phone chassis itself.

CHange it for a metal one and add ridges to it, to allow for even MORE surface area

Software updates can only do so much as its to slow down the cpu slightly (perhaps slightly undervolts it too)

The issue is that the 888+ is made by (grrr) Samsung.

However i am not just speaking about the 1iv here, im talking in general.

Hey guys, from my own point of view, I can only say that it doesn't matter, glass or plastic that is not the issue!! It's the SW and chip that matters.
