In the UK, I just bought an good-as-new Xperia 5iv, as a backup phone to my main 5iv. However, instead of the XQ-CQ54 model, normal to this region, it turned out to be a SOG09, which is made for the Japanese market.
After looking into it, and setting it up, it turns out that the model should work ok for me, as it's virtually identical to the XQ-CQ54, aside from a couple of bandwidths & apps from the Japanese carrier.
HOWEVER, when I came to setting up my Google Wallet for contactless payment, it will not accept my bank cards - cards which work fine on my XQ-CQ54 wallet for contactless. I get the error message "this device can't be set up to pay contactless" "your device doesn't meet contactless payment security standards. It may be rooted or running uncertified software".
I have checked in the Play Store, and the SOG09 is certified as ok by Play Protect, so it's not the hardware.
I have looked through the apps and can't find any obvious signs of root apps or malware - it all seems like normal stuff to my (amateur) eyes.
I am pretty sure it's not the age of the model, and hence the limitations of security updates to the latest Android version it can run (14), as my other 5iv phone is on the same version, which runs contactless ok - and they are both fully updated.
I went back to the seller, who was very reasonable, and offered me a full refund, but I chose to keep it (as I don't have time to get another before I travel abroad), so he gave me some money back - he seems trustworthy.
Does anyone recognise the problem, and importantly, is this fixable?
