I purchased an SEL1018 a few weeks ago and took a couple of photos with it at home to check it all worked, then didn't use it again until today. It was working fine for about 3 hours (I took perhaps 50 photos), then after turning the camera back on, the lens made some very loud clicking noises (the aperture motor I think) and wouldn't focus on anything anymore. My other lenses all still work fine, but this lens doesn't do anything and isn't recognised by the camera an more. Extremely poor quality control on Sony's behalf and I'm not happy. Something so expensive that breaks after 3 hours of light use is totally unacceptable. I'll take it back to the shop to have it replaced in warranty, but is there anything I could try this weekend while the shop is closed that might bring it back to life?
I noticed it was quite loud when focussing the first time I used it, but I just assumed it was a loud lens. I've had loud lenses before (not Sony though). Clearly it was delivered with a defect.
