We have had this tv for some time and there was never any problem connecting to the internet and watching youtube. My mother has recently moved and we tried reconnecting the tv to the internet. This is a wired connection. The connection is fine, the connection manager says the connection works and the tv is connected to the internet...but as soon as we try to watch something or if we try to update the firmware it says it has a connection error. Eventhough it says it's connected to the internet. I have also tried a wireless connection, but this gives me the same result: it says it's connected to the internet, but we cannot watch or do anything due to connection problems: please help!

It might be worth performing a factory data reset on the KDL-40EX720. You can do this by following the instructions here.

Try refreshing internet content by going to Settings > System Settings > Set-up > Network > Refresh Internet Content.
if the same thing happens if you connect the TV to a hot spot created by a smart phone? (Make sure the phone is not connected to the same home network, so use 4G instead)
