darker picture when playing Blu ray's though TV

I'm currently using my new Sony Vaio (EC series) laptop to play Blu Rays through my TV.  However I have noticed that when I connect it to my plasma TV (via HDMI), the picture is way too dark.  Even when I adjust the TV's brightness & contrast to maximum, it is still too dark.

Other times it seems fine, so the problem appears to be intermittent.  Originally I thought is must be down to the Power Settings on the laptop, but I have now turned these off.

I find that if I choose to display the picture through the TV only (using the FN+F7 key to toggle), the picture sometimes is normal, and sometimes is dark.  It appears to be a bit hit & miss, and I cannot quite put my finger on the cause ?

I think if I choose to disable the laptop display before I start the Blu Ray movie,  I think this way works fine, but I'm going to have to experiment a bit further..  Any suggestions ?

The another annoying thing is that whilst playing a Blu Ray throught the TV, if I turn the TV over, then back to input used for connecting the laptop, the laptop reloads the Blu ray taking me back to it's main menu.  I then have to F-FWRD through the film to get back to where I was (I'm using Win DVD software).
