i have a via with 500g disc and windows 7, how can i partition hard disk for windows 7 and windows xp

hello i am still quite new to all of this, my old computer had xp and i got quite used to it and maybe that is the reason that i am finding win7 such hard going.

so instead of getting rid of 7 completely i was thinking of having 2 drives on one and have all my old stuff on xp while i gradually get into seven, can someone tell me how to do it using simple language a step by step please?
