I have the same problem. It stopped working several months ago.
Previously it worked fine for about 2 year, but now it doesn't anymore.
My laptop is VGN-FW21E and it has MS and SD/MMC card readers.
The Device Manager recognizes those devices and shows the icons of those applications as well as You can see SD card and MS card readers in My Computer window.
I've tried to uninstall those drivers, when let the windows to install them back. Later I let windows to check the drivers - I got the message that they are the best drivers at the moment.
Unfortunately, when I insert the SD card, it (the SD card reader in My Computer) blinks couple of times, the SD card light also flashes several times that the contact was initiated, but nothing happens later on.
When I open SD card reader icon, I get the message - Please insert SD card.
That SD card is 1GB and easily recognazable by other machines.
The drivers are installed from Sony VAIO recovery CD, therefore it should work fine.
I haven't tried the MS socket, cause I don't have the any MS.
The operating system: Windows Vista Home Premium Service Pack 1 32-bit
I honestly don't know what else could I do to solve this issue.
Please help.
