Gap at the upper speaker grill

I've noticed a small gap(like a small hole from defected manufacturing) at the upper speaker grill out of the box. Thus I wonder do the grills involve with preventing the phone from water intake or it's just for the phone's appearance. For instance, if the grill's broken or teared would the water be able to leak inside the phone chassis. Thank you in advance for your reply guys : )
