hdmi output was disabled on xperia devices for "design" reasons, hdmi output comes by default os it was disabled by sony for some weird reason most likely due to getting people to use miracast, has this been fixed with the xperia 1 as i have decided to buy the 1 but if it has hdmi output disabled like all the other ones then i am doubtful.

AHHHHHHHH
I see what you are saying and why
When I had the XZ Premium, Sony made a real poor and some may say (low) business choice.
EVEN THOUGH USB C is capable of HDMI out, sony PURPOSLEY disabled that function , in order to sell their 'Mirrorcast' solution, google pixel phones did the same for their chromebox at that time.
I did not try my XZ3 or XPERIA 1 for that function, sorry.
Will check tonight.
@GilgameshUK
The Xperia 1 definitely supports this function. It would be helpful (if you get it working) to post which USB-C-HDMI adapter you are using.
I'm using this (very expensive) one:

- the HP USB-C Spectre travel dock
ah im not going to spend that much for a dock bud
Rather spend that om a gimbal, anyway it should not need something like that, as a £5.00 lead USB-C to HDMI should be enough.

Don't blame you
I only bought it because I needed guaranteed compatibility with my HP Spectre Folio - & I got a guarantee from HP customer care that I could return it for a full refund if it didn't work.
I have an xperia XZ2 and that's a fairly recent model, so if it does get Android 10 hopefully they will reintroduce the feature.
I do however have an older Xperia Z3, would that still support the HDMI out via the older Micro USB port it has rather than USB-C??
@dcultrapro, the information that I have available is that the hardware in the Xperia XZ2 does not support this via the USB Type-C port.
The Xperia 1 is the first device since the Xperia Z5-series that supports this feature, so hopefully it will continue to be available as not everyone has Wi-Fi available when going on vacation and so forth and want to watch downloaded content on a TV rather than on the device itself.
I will of course forward the feedback, but if it is a hardware limitation, there isn't that much that can be done.
@drlmiles, I just wanted to thank you for assisting the users in this thread that have questions regarding this feature. I'm back from my summer vacation now so I'm active here at the forum again!
Have a nice Friday and an awesome weekend!
I was under the impression, as I'm sure was the case for everyone else, that the HARDWARE supports the feature fine, they simply turned the functionality off by choice because they wanted to push for their cast apps and solutions that way.
@dcultrapro, that is all the information I have about it, so I can't say if that is the case or not, but we have had the same features such as screen mirroring (Miracast) and casting to Chromecast in previous devices that supported MHL/HDMI, for example, the Xperia Z5-series.
This is great to hear!
I hope to see an Xperia 1 compact, and hope that it would maintain this feature as I have been holding out to buy the first Sony that has both of these traits.
