XPERIA 1 volume buttons default on Media not ring and notification??

Sony please please please fix this???

Pretty please???

How can you allow to have the Media as only option and not even have Ring & Notification as an option?

All the years we used these buttons for keeping ring and notification controlable in office, work and public environments.

To open settings either directly or via widgets does not make sense, why 50 steps to reduce or increase my phone volume?

Please listen to the majority of users request, pain and frustrations

Hi @M5_Dual_South_Africa,

This is the default behaviour for the volume buttons in Android Pie since Google changed it in this version compared to how it worked in previous Android versions.

As far as I know, in Android 10 they have made a change that lets you adjust the other volumes without having to go into settings, but I'm not 100% sure how it will look in Android 10 on an Xperia device, as Android 10 has not been released yet for Xperia devices.

There are apps available in the Google Play store that changes the behaviour back to how it was in previous Android versions as well, so you can have look there.

I hope that answers your question as to why it has been changed at least.

Thank you, but I know why it changed.

My reaction to Sony is why willingly accept the change from Google and not challenge them to cater for their market, surely Sony as n client can request at least an option for the user to select default if not all available on power button screen as in the past.

It does not make any sense if this was an action that affected the production of a user, you will always streamline and make sure everything is not going to cost extra money.

It simply does not compute...

Jonas is there any way to check if this issue was fixed in Android 10? OMG that would be great because Google messing with this ringtone volume is soo annoying me, at least sony should fix google's incompetency since Google broke standard functionality that was working fine and left people without option to change it! Where Android should be for those who wants to have control, options and customizations! Because of this issue I was even thinking about switching to Apple since they do not have such stupid ideas...

Also, I have the feeling there are no longer any big changes in Android, in Android 10 not many major differences to Android 9. This is why I think now Google started to break the standard functionalities just only to bring the "fix" to new version and show the people what new dramatic changes and improvements they made...

I was even thinking about creating a list/ petition to European Union's commission to address this issue that people were left with no option to change it! Moreover it is now not possible to adjust the volume without making a noise! Imagine youre in a conference, church or any other place you should be silent or just your child is sleeping..

I hope in future google will pay more penalties in billions for such stupid and nonsense decisions that are impacting people's life. Especially as I repeat they left people without option to NOT accept their stupidity...

I swear if this is not fixed in Android 10 I will make noise and inform European Union and hopefully Google pay a lot for such decisions so that they will think twice next time...

I agree, it's weird. Ringtone should be a default option, not a media. Thanks for opening the thread. I also was about to complain.

@M5_Dual_South_Africa,

I don't work directly with the software development side of things, so I'm not sure how the discussion went regarding Android Pie and the volume controller, but if I'm not mistaken, some other brands are not using the "default" Android Pie volume controller at least, so every manufacturer should be allowed to change it at least.

I can tell you that I have forwarded the feedback since Android Pie was launched as I knew this would be a very big discussion point when I first saw it, but it has not been changed yet and I'm not quite sure how it looks in Android 10.

@azzido2, I don't have a Pixel device available, but I remember reading that in Android 10 on those devices, you can tap the little cog wheel at the bottom and it doesn't take you straight to the sound settings as it does now and instead you have the volume sliders on the screen.

There is an official reply on the Pixel forum where a user asks this question, so please have a look there (link below) and you can probably find a picture or even a video if you check some Android 10 reviews on YouTube.

I haven't tried the Android 10 beta myself so I can't say how it worked in there on Sony Xperia devices or if that was even the final "version" at the end.

For the part where you can't adjust the volume without it being heard, you can always tap the little bell at the top and switch between no sound, vibration and sound. This will only make a small sound when enabling the sound, not when switching to vibration mode or total silent mode.

Since Android 10 has not been released for Sony Xperia devices, I can't give you an answer how it will look in our devices until they are updated to Android 10 though.

@Alex_Xperia1, I can see that my colleague Martin has already forwarded your feedback in that thread! Slightly_smiling_Face

@mfuad, I agree! It's quite strange to change this after so many years with having the ring tone as the default volume.

For me personally, I always keep the ring tone volume on max and use the Do not disturb feature so silence my device during working hours, so for me the change doesn't affect me that much, but this is of course not the same for everyone.

Thanks again for the feedback everyone and have an awesome weekend! Slightly_smiling_Face
