Can't apply firmware update to XR-55A95L Bravia TV

I keep getting an "Updated software is available" message on the screen of my fairly new XR-55A97L TV.  Using the "simple" remote control I press OK and get told "Preparing the software update" - all good so far.  A short while later I get a message saying "Update complete, will be applied after TV is switched off".

I have switched it off with a short press of the ON/OFF button and the software has NOT been applied after re-start, as I get the same "Updated software is available".  So, I do it all again.

This time, I switch the TV off with the hardware button on the back, near the USB ports.  Same thing.  Software has NOT been applied after re-start, as I get the same "Updated software is available".  So, I do it all again.

I have done this 5 or 6 times now, getting the update available message but without the software being updated on this decidedly non-intuitive XR-55A95L user interface.

Can anyone help me understand what I am doing incorrectly, please ?

It may be that you are interfering with the update process by switching off/ restarting the TV yourself.

Leave the update process to do the restart.

Or you can download the update to your computer and then transfer the update to a USB stick and apply

the update that way rather than rely on the over the air method.

Hi @dyvroeth   I personally would factory reset the TV and temporary remove all inputs to try a complete fresh start. You never know if something is running that is interrupting the update.

Thanks for

:

1) Replying

2) For the link to the explicit firmware patch I have been trying to apply.

I'll give what you suggest a try.

Thanks for replying.

I won't be going down this path, but thank you for suggesting it.

The installer should know it is about to install and it should automatically put the hardware in a state to receive it; if that means stopping running software or cancelling recordings, so be it - I have asked for the UPDATE, after all.

I have been burnt so many times with "Factory Reset":

1) there's no facility to "Save Current Configuration" beforehand and no "Restore Original Config" afterwards, that you can never get the box to behave the way you want it to again.

2) It will likely trash all my account subscriptions and credentials (again, no save/restore offered).  Why does Sony think I have nothing better to do with my life than thrash about in the innards of its supposedly "consumer" electronics ?

But thanks for the thought, anyway.

Hi @dyvroeth   Is that what Sony told you?

I cannot reach a Sony tech desk and I'm guessing they don't monitor this community board.

I doubt I'm interfering with the update process.

I get a message saying Update will be applied when you next switch on your TV.

It doesn't.

I won't be messing around with USB sticks, but thanks for the suggestion.  This stuff should just work, out of the box.  I am properly connected to my router via an ethernet cable, so there should be nothing stopping it from updating.  But I am now onto my 6th attempt and it still won't apply it.

This should be absolutely seamless for a domestic appliance; it isn't.

It's hardly messing about with USB sticks it is just a different method to apply the update.

This stuff does just work otherwise this forum and others would be flooded with similar questions like your from the millions of people that have Sony TVs.

I use the USB method to install any new updates. After plugging in the USB to the TV the automatically

show the update progress page which also informs you that the after transferring the update contents to the TV the TV will switch off by itself and it is at this stage the TV will install the update. The TV will restart itself and the update should now be applied.

If at anytime during this process you are switching the TV off this could be what is causing the update to fail.

So try again and leave the TV to do the update on its own, see if that makes the difference.
