What Sony camera are you using?
Most Sony cameras work OK as plug-n-play devices on the iMac. The data cards just mount like a separate disc drive on the desktop. You can't use Windows software though.
You will need to use the Apple software - most cameras seem to work fine with iPhoto/iMovie.
