Hi,
I seem to be unable to get IE as the default browser on my new VPCF12Z1E. Despite IE telling me it isn't and me ticking the box to say it should be.
Grateful for any ideas...
Cheers

Hi,
I just had a very nice and useful chat with Sony's technical support and they managed to resolve the problem for me:
Click on the Start button, go to the system tray, then click on "programs" and finally to "standrad programs".
Then choose "program access and computer defaults". (This is the lower most link. I'm sorry but I'm using the German Win 7 64-bit version, so exact names may vary).
Choose "Custom" and set the dot to the "Internet Explorer" and activate the box behind it ("Enable access to this program"). Then click OK. That's it.
If it doesn't work, try to uncheck the "Enable access to this program" behind "Google Chrome" in the aforementioned list.
Hope, this helped.
Bye.
Hi almurta,
The usual way is to click on Tools from the toolbar in Internet Explorer 8 and select Internet Options. Then select the Programs tab from the top of the window to access the default browser settings. Click on 'Make Default'. You can even choose to be alerted if Internet Explorer is not your default browser. Click OK to save your changes.
Make sure you are logged on as an Administrator.
If for any reason this does not work you can try going to Start and typing in default and choosing default programs from the box above. It should be highlighted in blue so just press enter. Click on Set Your Default Programs and find IE. Click on the large button that says Set This Program as Default.
Hi Blencogo,
Thanks for your advice - sadly it's not working for me.
Done your 1st para a number of times and everytime IE restarts it tells me it's not the default and asks whether I want it to be - to which I say yes and go around in circles.
As for your 3rd para - Also done that, by a slightly different route. IE doesnt appear in the list and Chrome is the only choice.
I suspect Google and Sony have "an arrangement" and they've configured things this way. I've asked Sony Support but it's the weekend. I think I'll probably have to uninstall Chrome.
Coincidentally, "Browser Choice" popped up a few minutes ago, and even using that did'nt succeed in keeping IE as the default.
Any further thoughts gratefully received.
Cheers
Leave it with me and I'll see what I can find.
You may be right as we did have a similar situation recently with Google Desktop. With that it was necessary to uninstall the program and, in many cases, edit the Registry to allow Windows Sidebar to run as it had been turned off inthe Registry settings.
Actually, Google Chrome isn't too bad and has several advantages over IE. That said I still prefer Firefox myself.
Hi almurta,
could you provide an image of the current file associations for Internet Explorer please..
You should find these by going to Start, then Control Panel
In Control Panel click on Programs (if in default setting) followed by Default programs..
In Default programs click on Set your default program..
In the Set your default progams window click on Internet Explorer and then click on Choose defaults for this program..
Then use the snipping tool to capture an image of the file associations..
Hi Thalamus,
Thanks for your interest. Unfortunately IE doesnt appear in the list of Default Programmes - just Chrome as the only browser.
Cheers
Hi,
Yes I quite like Chrome and am happy to have it available. It has caused me trouble in the past, not responding on an earlier version of Windows. However, I'm not very pleased about it being imposed. I can of course still use IE.
I'll explore Firefox when I've got this sorted out!!
Cheers
Hi,
sadly I'm facing exactly the same problem on my new Sony Vaio Z notebook (one week old) and I also haven't found an answer.
We're obviously not alone and it seems to be a problem restricted to Sony Vaio notebooks only as you can read in the following thread:
Please let me know if you managed to resolve the problem.
It seems as if Sony is trying to force us to use Chrome only and nothing else.
Bye.
