Vaio VGN A517S black screen with windows running HELP!

My laptop starts with the LCD screen images flickering before it turns black with windows running and even AVAST announcing that it has successfully updated its anti virus definitions!!!

Whats the problem here? LCD screen? Inverter? Sleep button| Driver|

HELP....i need to use this laptop donated by well wishers for our wild elephant rescue operation in Malaysia!!!!

If you shine a torch on the Vaio's screen can you still see the icons, etc.?

Try connecting your Vaio to an external monitor, do you still have the same problem.?

Do you get the same problem when in safe mode.?

To enter safe mode restart your Vaio and when you see the Vaio logo press the F8 key repeatedly..

Do you get the same problem in the BIOS

To enter the BIOS restart your Vaio and when you see the Vaio logo press the F2 key repeatedly..

To exit the BIOS press F9 to reset the BIOS to default and press F10 to save and exit..
