200GB Micro SD Card not allowing video - Unknown Error

Hi, I recently bought a Sony Xperia X...

it stated that you could use a micro SD upto 200GB, so I purchased one:

details: SanDisk Ultra 200 GB MicroSDXC UHS-I Memory Card

I previously had a Sony Xperia Z2, where I used the same type of SD card but which was upto 128GB.

I inserted the SD card in & everything seemed OK, it let me store the photos on it fine + it let me move some apps onto the SD card too (the apps worked fine)... but everytime I tried to record video, the mobile just froze, came up with an 'unknown error' message and went back to the main screen...

I ran a few tests myself...

it lets me record video on the internal memory fine.

it lets me record video onto my old 128GB micro SD card fine too.

it just won't work when I use video to save onto my 200GB micro SD card.

(the whole reason I bought thr Xperia X was for the camera within in, hence me also buying a 200GB SD micro card).

is there something else I can try to sort this out?

or is this a known problem?

Thanks in Advance.

Hi @vinusoma,

Welcome to the community.

Is your SD card formatted in FAT32 or exFAT?

Hi,

thanks for the reply.

I'm not too sure how the card is formatted, I've just used the SD card as it came.

I can try to format it on my computer this evening.

should I reformat it to exFAT? (& NOT FAT32)...

I will try it when I get back home today and post back the results.

thanks in advance...

Hi,

I've just tried reformatting the card as exFAT via my laptop and still same problem...

I also tried to erase & format via the mobile itself, but this didn't sort the problem out either.

I've just ordered a replacement, so we'll see if this is down to the micro SD card or the mobile not being able to handle a 200GB card.

@vinusoma,

Does it make a difference if you lower the resolution of the video?

No it didn't... that was one of the first things I tried.

@vinusoma,

Hmm. Well, seeing as it works with another SD card, it may be the card itself. Please let me know how you get on when the new card arrives.

Hi vinusoma,

Out of curiosity, did getting a new micro SD card resolve your issue? I've having the same exact issue with a Sony XZ and 256GB Samsung card.

Thanks!

OK, an update...

got the replacement 200GB microSD card on the weekend, it still wasn't working... so went back the store where I got phone & they couldn't work it out either...

they actually got me a replacement mobile, which I picked up yesterday...

& it's still having the same issues...

so on this page:

https://www.sonymobile.com/gb/products/phones/xperia-x/specifications/

where is says

Memory and storage Up to 200 GB microSD™ card

this is clearly wrong... same problem with 2 different 200GB SD cards & 2 different Xperia X mobiles...

don't know if it used to work and one of your updates has stopped it working... or the specification was written wrong... disappointing if this is the case...

unless someone out there as any other suggestions, I'm actually going to have a buy another microSD card, this time a 128GB one... not very happy to do it, but can't see any other way of using this mobile, since one of the reasons I bought it was for the better camera on it...

no with the Xperia X, tried another SD card, even got the mobile replaced... still same issue...  either Sony have done something to stop it working with one of their updates or the specifcations were written incorrectly...

since you're having a similar issue with another mobile (where is says it can handle a 256GB card), I'm hoping it's something Sony did with one of their updates & thus can be sorted out...
