Prebuilt apps still ok to use?

Hello all.
I have noticed that my Xperia ray, despite never being updated, shows that all software is up to date. I suspect that my carrier never released any updates for it.
The Google apps such as Gmail client have updates offered, so I was wondering if the phone's own apps for contacts, email etc are still safe to use.
Please can you offer any advice.

When you bought your phone it may have already had the latest firmware installed and yes your phone is still safe to use

Some advice, Don't update your Xperia Ray to ICS, it will slow down your phone dramatically, gingerbread its quite stable.

That is reassuring to know. I have had no problems but was a little concerned all the same.
I have not seen any option to update to ICS but will not update it should it be offered.

I have an Xperia Arc, and it's horrible on ICS, I've downgrad my Arc to Gingerbread.

I like the android on here. I really like the main menu layout, where you scroll your apps. And everything seems to work pretty well.
I have noticed a few certificate errors using the stock browser, but always cancel navigation when it crops up. Do I need to update certificate lists like on my PC?

You might want to use Chrome instead
