Attention VGN-CS11 users and SONY!! Problem with FAN!

Hi everyone!

If you have recently bought a new VGN-CS11 series notebook, I'd ask that you take a moment to read this post.

Since I unboxed the new notebook, I have been experiencing strange noises from the fan unit evey time it operates. Before, it used to be simply that every time the fan stopped working, it made a soft "growl" noise (probably due to some internal vibration) for a mere second or two. Recently, however, it has also begun to make a strange, barely audible "clicking sound" as the fan starts up and operates, accompanied by the "growl" at the end, like before. At first, I was led to believe that it was just the normal operating noise that the fan made (although quite annoying!), but due to these recent developments, I am more and more convinced that this is some problem or malfunction that perhaps, will only get worse with time.

Other CS11 users have already posted in the thread "Problem with fan!!" that they also experience this problem, and, from what I've been able to gather, it does not seem like an isolated problem... but this is what we need to confirm.

That is the purpose of this thread.

I would like to ask and encourage all CS11 users to post in this thread if they also experience the same "problem" with the fan (abnormal noises that are clearly distinguishable from normal operation) or anything fan-related, especially if you have experienced them since you bought the notebook and haven't done anything that could "provoke" them (like dropping the notebook or hitting it in some way, blocking the ventilation vents, etc...). This is to have a general scope that this is not an isolated problem that is only happening to a few, and that way, perhaps Sony will take an interest and take the necessary measures to correct this problem if this, in fact, turns out to be a generalised problem.

I have already created a new case with e-Support regarding this issue. Note that these are brand new laptops that have been out on sale for barely a month, and now would be a good time to correct any problems that may arise. If this turns out to be a common problem for most CS11 users, then we should all contact Vaio-Link or e-Support and report the problem, so that Sony will take this problem into consideration if enough people have it.

Remember: the sooner, the better!

Also, perhaps it would also be of interest that those CS11 users that DON'T experience this problem also post in this thread, to see how many DO and how many DON'T... it may be interesting to also know.

Ok... without taking any more of your time, I leave this thread to fellow CS11 users and to anyone that might be able to lend a helping hand. Thanks!!!

Hi!

If they really don't want to change our fans, then a software fix for the fan control program to keep it continuously spinning at a slow speed when the cpu isn't taxed would be the next most appropriate solution. It would avoid us constantly hearing the clicking sound every 10s and would keep the laptop cooler, thus increasing its life.

What I've noticed is that my laptop runs cooler when the fan is constantly on (like while running an intensive 3d game) than having it on browsing the web (with the continous on/off ritual)... thus reinforcing this theory and that turning constantly on and off does not contribute to keeping it cooler.

I really don't know what to do about this... sending it again only to get it back with the same problem isn´t the way to go. What options do we have? What can we do about it? The only thing I know for certain is this: we can't sit around and do nothing waiting for a fix that will not come unless we do something about it.

I think that if Sony were willing to do something they would have done so already.

How much time can it take to develop a BIOS update that keeps the fan spinning at low speeds?
I'm a Computer Engineering student and I bet I could develop it under a week (most of the time would be used reading the existing code and maybe adapting to the programing language used)

So honestly, who do they think they are fooling by doing nothing? I bought a VAIO because I wanted a pc, but everytime I look at my brother's Macbook I wish I had bought one of those and installed Windows on it. At least it has no hardware problems!

update....
i have now sent my laptop off 3 times and it still has a noisy fan that randomly comes on for 2 seconds then goes off for a second then starts again then makes a purr noise when its finished!
sony have said they now have a fan that will be ready next week that will solve all the problems according to their engineers.
why should i send it off for a 4th time? im thinking of going to watchdog as this is ridiculous. what does anyone else think?
i have now had enough and just want a refund, maybe if everyone gets together they will actually listen to us.
i also wish i bought a macbook and will never buy anything sony ever again

Hi there I have the same exact problem. It started occuring 1 month after buying tough, and not the first day as some other people I've seen here.
One thing that I am wondering is: is it likey to get worse in time? will it affect pc lifetime? Because if not I can surely live with that and it doesn't bother me (it's not that loud and it kinda keeps company ehhehehe) but if if it's going to affect the whole thing i better bring it in for repair....

any thoughts?

THanks!

I am from Austria and I have exactly the same problem
I've sent my Vaio in for repairs and they replaced my fan with a new one.
When i got it back all seemed to be fine...there was no clicking sound after the fan turned off. For a while all was working perfect, but after 1 month all came back again.
It is the same sound as in the Youtube-Video - every time the fan starts/stops there is this grrrrr-sound!!
Is there really nothing we can do???
Has anybody heard something new or is there someone who has no problems anymore after sending it in?
